Natural indigo dye is derived from tropical plant of the genus Indigofera. It has been used since antiquity, across different cultures around the world. In Africa the indigo craft is very much alive and dyers are considered true artists, using traditional techniques such as tie-dying. Artisanal dyeing is done in very small batches. Indigo stripes is a jersey cotton fabric dyed for Kimalé in Nigeria by using the batik technique. The stripes have irregularities due to the handmade process.
